The answer to this problem, is that you should be asked to OPT-IN. Until then, its YOU who have to OPT-OUT. The next time someone makes an unwanted sales call to your home, read them your very own script!

I am registered with The Telephone Preference Service.

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a central opt out register whereby individuals can register their wish not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls.

It is a legal requirement that companies do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS.

The original legislation was introduced in May 1999. It has subsequently been updated and now the relevant legislation is the Privacy and Electronic (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.

I have been registered with The Telephone Preference Service for more than 28 days. It is a legal requirement for telemarketers not to call a TPS subscribed number after it has been registered for 28 days.

I need you to give me the name of your organization, and the address you are operating from. I shall write to you for an explanation of why you have called a TPS registered number.

I will pass the information you give to me to the Information Commissioner's Office, who is the UK independent supervisory authority reporting directly to the UK Parliament.

You should note that if your Company is based abroad and it calls into the UK and is making a call on behalf of a UK based company, you must comply with UK regulations and screen your call lists against Telephone Preference Service before making an unsolicited sales and marketing call to a UK telephone number.

In the meantime I request that you remove the number you have rung me from.
